Windows Operating Systems
The Windows Operating Systems (OS) have a very vast legacy from way back in the day with Windows 95 to Windows 7 in use today. The following is an overview of these OSs and the ones that came between them.
Windows 95 was Microsoft’s very first Graphical User Interface (GUI) product that did not need the Disk Operating System (DOS). It started the plug and play and ActiveX standards that are still in use today. A big improvement was the Registry (database for storing system software and hardware info). Before that, this info used to be stored in files. The OS was stand-alone and had the FAT16 file system for networked systems.
Windows 98 and ME were more stable and used the better FAT32 system, as well as better support, recovery, and backup tools.
Windows NT 3.51 Server
Windows NT 3.51 Server/Workstation was designed to secure and enhance network functionalities. It had emphasized domain rather than workgroups and didn’t use peer-to-peer networks; rather it used the client/server model.
Windows NT 4.0 Server
Windows NT 4.0 Server/Workstation was upgraded to the previous Windows OS.
Windows 2000 Server/Professional was also upgraded for the Registry which was replaced by the Active Directory.
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional was a game-changer. It had all of the Windows 2000’s features and added things like the Microsoft Management Console which was a better user interface. It also had better support for the plug-and-play. Kernet data structures were also made more secure so as to stop malignant applications from targeting the OS core.
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2003 contained several step-ups from Windows 2000 in security areas like the Internet Information Services (IIS) and had four editions. Normally, all of these had the Remote Desktop, VPN Support, Load balancing, EFSm .NET application services and management services.
Windows Vista used User Account Control (UAC) and full drive encryptions. Windows Server 2008 is the latest Windows server OS, while Windows 7 is the latest Windows desktop in popular use today. It has had some compatibility issues but is successful.
